HighScope
The Region of Peel's Learn.Play.Care. Child Care Centres use the HighScope educational curriculum. In addition to having a diploma/degree in early childhood education, teachers are also trained and certified in HighScope.
How does the HighScope Curriculum work?
All classrooms have many learning areas set for the children including home, block, art, toy, book, sand and water play areas, along with printing areas for older children.
Plan-do-review time includes:
- Plan: 10-15 minutes: small-group time during which children plan what they want to do during work time (the area to visit, materials to use, and friends to play with)
- Do: 45-60 minutes: work time to carry out their plans
- Review: 10-15 minutes: small-group time to review and recall with their teacher and other children what they've done and learned
In between "do" and "review," children clean up by putting away their materials or storing unfinished projects. Children are very active and focused during "do" time because they work on activities that interest them.
Teachers plan small-group times each day to focus on reading, mathematics and science activities. During this time, children experiment with materials and solve problems.
During large-group times, children and teachers come together for movement and music activities, storytelling and other shared experiences.
Teachers observe their group of children to see what they are interested in and use this information to plan activities that support their developing minds. Teachers also watch and listen to how each child is problem-solving with materials and their peers, guiding them through a problem-solving approach so that children learn to share their feelings and have an opportunity to make decisions on how they feel the problem should be solved.
