What is child care fee subsidy?

Child care fee subsidy is a program that helps qualifying families cover the cost of licensed child care for children up to the age of 12.

Subsidized care is available in over 450 centres and home-based child care programs.

Who can apply for child care fee subsidy?

You must be:

  • A Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or refugee with a valid work permit or school authorization
  • The parent, foster parent or legal guardian of a child up to 12 years of age
  • Residing with the child(ren)

Working parents:
You can apply if you are working full time or part time. To verify your hours of work you must provide two recent consecutive pay stubs and a letter from your employer on company letterhead confirming the hours of work and rate of pay.

Self-employed parents:
You are generally considered to be self-employed if you are actively conducting a full-time self-employed activity and you claim business expenses against your income.

Student parents:
You must be attending school or a recognized training program on a full-time or part-time regular basis. This may include high school, English as a Second Language (ESL), college/university and training programs.

Families with special needs:
If you require child care due to the special needs of your child or as a support in meeting your own special needs, you will be required to provide written documentation from a physician, health care agency or organization regarding the need for child care and ongoing involvement with your family.

If you are participating in the Ontario Works Program and need child care, contact your Ontario Works Case Worker.

Is there a waiting list for child care fee subsidy?

For qualifying families, there is no wait for child care fee subsidy in the Region of Peel.

When should I apply for child care fee subsidy?

A child care fee subsidy application should be completed four to six weeks before the confirmed start date for work/school or when a subsidized child care space has been secured by the parent or legal guardian.

How do I find a placement for my child?

Subsidy is available in a variety of child care settings. You choose the type of care you want for your child, either in a licensed day care centre or with a home child care provider through a licensed home child care agency.

Over 450 child care programs have subsidy agreements with the Region of Peel. It's a good idea to visit several child care centres and home child care agencies in your area to help you choose which program is best for your child.

Make a list of programs that meet the age(s) of your child(ren) and the hours of care you need. Some centres require you to register with them directly in order for your name to be placed on their waiting list. This is important as some centres have long waiting lists.

How do you determine if I am eligible for subsidy?

To determine whether you are eligible, we need.

  • Current Canada Child Tax Benefit Notice, which displays your Family Net Income
  • Current Notice of Assessment/Reassessment, which displays your Net Income on line 236
  • Current Universal Child Care Tax Benefit Verification

If you do not have this information and need a replacement, contact Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) at 1-800-959-8281 and ask for an Option C or-1-800-387-1193 for the Canada Tax Benefit Notice.

Benefit Notice

All families that receive child care fee subsidy must meet certain provincial requirements. To assess your child care fee subsidy eligibility, you will be required to meet with a Children's Services Worker for an in-person interview and to provide documentation of your:

  • Income.
  • Personal information.
  • Residence in the Region of Peel.
  • Approved reason for care.

Both parents, if applicable, must attend the interview.

There are three drop boxes at the Region of Peel's Brampton headquarters, should you need to provide additional documents following your appointment, All drop-boxes are available 24 hours a day.

  • A drive-through drop-box is located in the drive lane on the south side of the building. You can deposit your documents without leaving your vehicle.
  • There are two walk-up drop-boxes:
    • At the west entrance doors
    • Beside the main south entrance
