  • Canada Ratifies United Nations Convention on the
    Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On March 11, 2010, Canada accepted the very historic United Nations International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Convention aims "to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity." It reaffirms for persons with disabilities existing civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights set out in international law.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international treaty that identifies the rights of persons with disabilities as well as the obligations on States parties to the Convention to promote, protect and ensure those rights.

The Government of Canada consulted provincial and territorial governments and persons with disabilities and their organizations throughout the Convention's negotiation, signature and ratification processes.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on December 13, 2006, after several years of negotiation in which Canada took an active role. The Convention was negotiated during eight sessions of an Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly from 2002 to 2006, making it the fastest negotiated human rights treaty. Canada was among the first countries to sign the Convention when it was opened for signature on March 30, 2007.
