A Changing Environment

Budget planning is made even more complex when you consider the changing environment we live in. The Region’s decisions are evidence-informed and measured for success.

The 2012 Budget accounts for community issues and program pressures: changing population, aging infrastructure, environment issues, citizen safety, legislative compliance, Provincial subsidies, inflationary and recessionary impacts, rising fuel costs and long term financial sustainability.

Solutions will require:

  • long-term integrated planning
  • increased partnerships (e.g. area municipalities, community agencies, broader Health sector, neighbouring municipalities, senior levels of government)
  • new ways of conducting businesses (e.g. shared services, process improvements, technology, service level prioritization)
  • decisions about business appropriateness (i.e. Council may need to make difficult decisions about the businesses the Region provides)

The Region’s responsibility is to its citizens, ensuring the community’s needs are met while minimizing tax increases. Decisions made today must be affordable in the future.
