Election of Regional Chair
Eligibility Requirements

The Regional Chair is appointed by members of Regional Council at the Inaugural (First Meeting) Meeting in accordance with section 233 of the Municipal Act, 2001. A member of Regional Council or any other person is eligible to be elected if they are:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian Citizen;
  • a resident in the Region of Peel; and
  • not disqualified by any legislation.

In accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001, the following persons are disqualified from being elected Regional Chair:

  • a judge of any court;
  • a member of the Assembly as provided in the Legislative Assembly Act or of the Senate or House of Commons of Canada;
  • except in accordance with Part III of the Public Service Act, a crown employee as defined in that Act; or
  • an undischarged bankrupt or insolvent as defined under any legislative authority.
