9-1-1 Awareness Week

9-1-1 Awareness Week, Dec. 12 to 16, is a week dedicated to educating and reminding residents about the appropriate use of 9-1-1.

Peel’s emergency communicators respond to over 353,749 calls dispatching Police, Fire and Ambulance services to residents across Peel. Though many 9-1-1 calls are true emergencies, approximately half of the calls received are non-emergencies.

As the 9-1-1 emergency number service is an essential component of the emergency communication network in the Region of Peel, Regional Council proclaims the second week of December as 9-1-1 Awareness Week in Peel to help residents better understand the proper use of the 9-1-1 system.

To assist in further educating Peel residents about the proper use of 9-1-1, the Region has developed and distributed educational material such as brochures, posters and fact sheets. Educational material is distributed to local hospitals, schools, Regional and municipal buildings, libraries and community centres.

During 9-1-1 Awareness Week, Regional Council also honours its more than 240 emergency communicators for their professionalism when dealing with urgent and often difficult calls every day.

As part of 9-1-1 Awareness Week, the Region presents the Paul Schram Memorial Award for the Emergency Police, Fire and Ambulance Communicator of the Year at Regional Council during this week. The Paul Schram Memorial Award is presented to Emergency Communicator’s for displaying outstanding dedication, professionalism and achievement.

Please view the Paul Schram Memorial Award link for further information.

Conclusion

The 9-1-1 emergency number service is an essential component of the emergency communication network in the Region of Peel. The continued success of the 9-1-1 service reflects the combined dedicated efforts of all the public safety communication professionals within the Region.
