2009 Annual Financial Report

A Message from the Chair and Chief Administrative Officer

On behalf of Regional Council and the employees of the Region of Peel, we are pleased to provide you with our 2010 Annual Financial Report.

In 2010, approximately 1.31 million residents and 88,000 businesses in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga used Peel Regional government programs and services that range from community health and social development, to environment and infrastructure.

Economic hardships over the past few years have presented challenges to our residents and the Region of Peel itself. In co-operation with our provincial and federal government partners, the Region faced those challenges by investing $163.8 million through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, building vital infrastructure and creating over 1,600 jobs.

In 2010, the Region maintained the highest credit rating attainable by a municipality, based on the Region’s continued economic and financial strength. Reflecting Peel’s commitment to remain fully accountable to its citizens and taxpayers, the Region was also awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the ninth consecutive year. And through leadership, partnership and service excellence, services to all residents in Peel, including its most vulnerable citizens, were delivered with minimal effect on tax and utility rates.

As we move into the future, Peel remains an organization committed to excellence and continuous improvement. We will respond promptly to service demands, keep our commitments, and continue to meet the challenges of a rapidly growing population in a way that is sustainable and affordable.

With numerous accomplishments behind us, challenges before us, and opportunities to seize in the years ahead, we will continue to evolve as an organization. We will continue to work with community partners, other government organizations and the private sector to deliver quality and sustainable programs that meet the needs of Peel citizens and contribute to a vibrant, healthy and safe community. Our goal will remain the same - to be innovative in our approach, and transparent and accountable in our decision making. As an organization, Peel provides exceptional programs and services for those who live, work and play in our communities.
