Reducing Expenses through “Real Time” Energy Tracking
Smart Meter Technology
Finding ways to reduce energy expenses is always our main goal. So by tracking energy usage in real time it gives us accurate, measurable information that we can use to enhance our energy management.
At Energy Management we use leading-edge technology that monitors energy use as it's being consumed. By collecting this information through devices called "smart meters", we can see how much energy each Regional facility is consuming and in many instances, help them improve their energy efficiency. This collection of energy data gives Peel Region the ability to sharpen its energy use, ensuring the best in operating practices and cost savings.
Ontario’s Smart Metering Initiative
Smart meters are sophisticated measurement devices that give electricity consumers the choice to save.
Sound too good to be true? Well, think about it. The cost of generating electricity varies according to the level of demand at certain points of the day. For instance, running your washing machine at 6:30 p.m. when all your neighbours are home cooking dinner is not the cheapest, or "smartest" use of energy. It's a peak period and the smart meter lets you know that. In fact, it lets residents and business owners actually see when electricity demand is low and prices are lower. By choosing to shift your energy use to "off peak" hours when both demand and prices are lower, you can save money and help the environment. After all, this kind of reduction multiplied by many consumers might decrease the need for new power plants and transmission lines; think about that impact on the environment!
The Government of Ontario is aiming to install of 800,000 smart electricity meters by December 31, 2007 and have all Ontario electrical consumers outfitted with smart meters by December 31, 2010. As this initiative rolls out, the pricing system of electricity will also change, with the price of electricity shifting throughout the day based on demand.
