- According to the 2011 census, in 2011, the total population in the Region of Peel was 1.297 million persons.
- This represented an increase of 11.8 per cent or 137,359 persons between the census year 2006 and 2011.
- While this represented a slowing in the rate of growth relative to the 25.2 per cent growth registered in the previous census period (2001 – 2006), the growth in Peel's population remained one of the stronger growth rates among GTA municipalities.
- Growth rates among GTA municipalities were:
- York: 15.7 per cent;
- Halton: 14.2 per cent;
- Peel: 11.8 per cent;
- Durham: 8.4 per cent; and
- Toronto: 4.5 per cent.
- In terms of absolute change, Peel ranked second among GTA municipalities as follows:
- York: 139,812 persons;
- Peel: 137,359 persons;
- Toronto: 111,779 persons;
- Halton: 62,413 persons; and
- Durham: 46,866 persons.
- All three Peel municipalities contributed to the overall growth observed in Peel.
- Over the five year period 2006 – 2011:
- The population in Brampton increased by 20.8 per cent or by 76,910 to lead the increase in Peel;
- This pushed Brampton's total population to approximately 523,911 persons in 2011;
- The total population of Mississauga rose by 6.7 per cent or approximately 57,595 persons to reach approximately 713,443 persons; and
- The population in the Town of Caledon increased by 4.2 per cent or 1,920 persons to reach approximately 59,460 persons.
- The growth in Peel's population between 2006 and 2011 represented the continuation of a long term population growth trend in the Region.
- This trend is expected to continue in the medium to long term with Peel's population expected to reach about 1.64 million by 2031.
