Safety

General Physical Education Safety Guidelines:
- Know your first-aid plan
- Be prepared for emergencies
- Be aware of the risks
- Know your school board’s policies
- Make modifications to increase safety, if necessary
Clothing & Footwear
- Students must wear proper footwear & clothing (running shoes, comfortable, loose clothing)
- Remove any hanging jewelry. Jewelry that can’t be removed should be taped/covered.
- Modifications must be made to an activity when religious requirements present a safety concern
Facilities
- Check the activity area in advance and remove or avoid any potential hazards.
- Set a boundary around the area where your activity will take place.
Equipment
- Must be appropriate for the facility and age of the students.
- Check items frequently for wear and tear, report broken equipment.
- Place safety mats in all designated landing areas.
Supervision
- Follow board policies and protocols.
- Be present, in control of and fully attentive to all students.

Hydration
Hydration as a safety issue is often overlooked. If you don’t already do this, consider encouraging your students to have a water bottle at their desk. Review the hydration section for guidelines on fluid intake during and after physical activity, signs of dehydration and more.
