Safety Considerations

• Make sure the gym floor/ground is free of any obstructions, and that the floor isn’t wet or slippery.
• Remind students to keep their heads up when running to avoid collisions.
• Inform students to gently bump one another.
• Make sure the students perform the activities a couple of metres from the wall to allow the individual student to jog around the gym for one lap.

Instructions

• This activity can be performed either as a whole class or in smaller groups.
• Have students spread out over the entire gym facing one end and standing in rows.
• Choose one student to lead the class in a physical activity. 
• Another student will jog around the gym and complete one lap then he/she goes to the leader and gently “bumps” them to take over as leader to start a new activity.
• The old leader goes to the front of the line and bumps the first person in line who bumps the person beside and so on until the last student in line is bumped and runs one lap around the gym to bump the leader. 
• Throughout this time, the class is following the leader in the activity while they are bumping.

Accommodations/Modifications

• Change the bump into a tap on the shoulder or a high five instead of a bump.
• Instead of running to the other side of the room, have students hop, skip, side step, do jumping jacks, etc.
• If there are disabled students in the class, tell the leaders to alternate activities so that one activity may involve the legs and the next may involve the arms only, etc.  If the student(s) can use their arms, then they will continue the activity until the next arm activity is performed.
