Get Down

Grade:

Junior

Category:

Physical Activity

Subject:

Physical Activity

Location:

Classroom

Duration:

TBD

Safety Considerations

  • Make sure the floor is free of any obstructions.
  • Have students tuck in all chairs.
  • Create a “Stop” signal like shutting off the classroom lights to get the students’ attention.

Instructions

  • Ask students to walk quickly around the room.
  • When you call out "get down," students are to lie down on their stomach and then get back up and continue walking as quickly as possible.
  • Challenge the students to get up very quickly.

Accommodations/Modifications

  • For variety, have students identify different ways of moving (Hopping, skipping, jumping backwards) or in different pathways.  When you call out “Get down,” also add in the movement you want the class to do.  For example, “Get down, skipping.”
  • Music optional — teacher says “Get down!” and turns off music simultaneously; students lie down on their stomach and then get back up quickly when the music is turned on again.  (Use the “Everybody Move!” CD.)
