Safety Considerations

  • Make sure the floor is free of any obstructions.
  • Ensure that students spread apart. This activity can be done behind or beside their desks.

Instructions

  • Have students begin the activity by marching slowly on the spot.
  • Say "Action," then one of the statements below. Children follow your accompanying action.
Statement Action
"It's raining hard" Children march faster
"It's raining harder" Children run on the spot, pumping arms back and forth
"I hear lightening" Children clap hands
"I hear thunder" Children shout "Boom"
"It's raining softer" Children slow down, marching more slowly until the rain stops

Accommodations/Modifications
  • Change the activities to suit the children in your class, and to accommodate any physically disabled students.
  • Do the activity with the students so they can visually comprehend the instructions. (This is also helpful for hearing impaired students.)
