Food and Beverages - Making Healthy Food Accessible

Introducing a Meal Program - Lunch and Snack Programs

More and more schools are looking for ways to create positive, healthy eating environments, while finding ways to increase school funds. There are several local lunch and snack programs/companies that do just that. And some of them are community run.

When investigating a local lunch or snack program for your school, keep these questions in mind:

  • Are your kitchens inspected by the Health Department?
  • Has a registered dietitian designed or reviewed your menus?
  • Does your menu follow Canada's Food Guide?
  • What geographic area or areas do you serve?
  • Do you follow safe food handling practices? For example, how do you transport and serve foods in order to keep them at the intended temperature?
  • Are your kitchens and menus free of common allergenic foods, like nuts?
