Help Parents Take Action - Healthy Choices at Home
Healthy Body Image
Kids who feel good about themselves:
- Understand that their appearance is not the main measurement of their worth.
- Understand that their appearance is just one aspect of who they are.
- Are more likely to take good care of themselves as adults through healthy eating and regular physical activity.
Unhealthy Weight Control
We live in a diet-crazy world where the fear of getting fat and the pressure to be thin and toned affects us all. Even young children are expressing dissatisfaction with their bodies. Adolescence is a particularly vulnerable time to develop body image concerns.
These concerns can lead to unhealthy weight control through:
- Skipping meals
- Restricting food choices
- Smoking
- Purging
- Excessive exercise
- Steroid use
Dieting Fact: Dieting increases the risk of not only developing eating disorders, but also of becoming overweight.
