Tips for parents

.::: Is your teen having a party?

Did you know…

  • As a parent, you are liable for any alcohol your teen or their friends drink on your property
  • It is illegal to give alcohol to someone under the age of 19
  • You are legally responsible for what goes on in your home:

    • even if you are not present
    • even if you don’t know guests were drinking
    • even if the guests brought their own alcohol

Here are some tips for hosting teen parties:

  • Make sure the party has adult supervision
  • Keep it small - smaller parties are easier to manage
  • Have a plan for handling unwelcome guests
  • Set clear rules and limits
  • Make sure all alcohol and medication in your home is not accessible
  • Take action with guests who are drinking or causing trouble - call their parents, don’t allow them to drive, if necessary call police
  • Do not allow guests to come and go to prevent off-site drinking
  • Allow friends to sleep over if they can’t get a safe ride
  • Have a phone list of emergency numbers
