Be Safe: Promote Alcohol-Free Pregnancies

Information for Health Care Providers

Health care providers have the opportunity to educate their clients/patients about the risks of alcohol consumption and pregnancy. Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and developmental delays in Canadian children. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) is preventable.

If you provide preconception or prenatal care you are in an excellent position to offer women support and accurate information about FASD. It’s important to ask about alcohol use and to talk to your clients in an open non-judgemental way. Your relationship with your client/patient can help prevent another child from being born with FASD.
