Help Prevent
Childhood Obesity

Be a Role Model

Be a Role ModelMany parents are not active themselves or do not make time to be active with their children. Children that have active parents are also more likely to be active.

Make physical activity a priority for you and your family:

  • Be positive when talking about physical activity.
Do you encourage your children to be active by suggesting fun activities? Do you express enjoyment in being active?
  • Encourage and praise, rather than pressure.
Do your children participate in physical activity because they enjoy it, or are they pressured to do so?
  • Take the active way.
Do you use active forms of transportation, like walking or biking to do a local chore? Do you show your children that physical activity is a priority in your own life?
  • Teach kids why physical activity is important.
Do your kids know that physical activity helps with confidence, self-esteem and concentration? Do they know it helps build strong bones and muscles?
  • Get involved.
Are you involved in any recreational activities like mall walks, charity events, or sports teams? Visit your local community centre or library to see what’s happening in your area.
  • Provide opportunities.
Do you provide your kids with occasions for lessons, sports or free time to be active or to play? Allow your kids to choose what they would like to participate in.
