The Facts about Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is becoming more common in Canada. There are many factors which can cause obesity in children. Some of these factors are related to the changes in our society today, such as larger portions and more screen time.
- Overweight or obesity can happen when more calories are being taken in than are being used during activity.
- Genetics or some medical conditions can also lead to obesity.
- Childhood obesity can lead to some serious health and emotional problems.
That is why children of all ages, shapes and sizes need our support to help them learn healthy habits so they will:
- Eat well
- Be active
- Feel good about themselves
They also need their parents and caregivers to role model being healthy.

In Canada
26% of 2 to 17 year olds were either overweight or obese in 2004:
- The percent of 2 to 5 year olds who were overweight or obese has been the same since 1978.
- For 6 years and older, the percent has doubled 1.
In the Region of Peel
28% of Grade 7 to 12 students were either overweight or obese in 2004:
- More males than females were obese.
