The Facts about Childhood Obesity

What is Obesity?

Eating too much and not being active enough can lead to weight gain beyond your child’s natural growth pattern. This can result in overweight or obesity.

What is Overweight? What is Obesity?

Overweight and obesity are defined using BMI-for-Age growth charts. One single measurement doesn’t tell the whole story. Changes need to be tracked over time before a child can be said to be overweight or obese.

What is a Healthy Weight?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ for a child’s weight. Children, like adults, have different natural body shapes and sizes even if they are eating healthy and being active. A child is in a healthy weight range when they are following their natural growth curve.

How Much Should My Child Weigh?

Every child has a different pattern of growth. His height and weight should be measured regularly by a health professional and recorded on special BMI-for-Age growth charts.
