Looking After Yourself

Parent Relief (Respite)

What is In-Home Respite?

Sometimes people looking after a child with a developmental disability need a break. A respite provider goes into the home to provide care and relief for the parent or caregiver.

What is Out-of-Home Respite?

Out-of-Home programs provide respite care outside the family home and can include residential, host family and camp programs. These programs allow family members to take time for other family matters, work responsibilities or vacations.

In-Home Respite Providers

  • Contract Workers (Special Services at Home workers)

A family can hire a contract worker through Special Services at Home (SSAH) or with respite dollars to provide the one-on-one support required for your family member. Families often find a contract worker by advertising at local high schools, libraries, churches, or in local newspapers. Some families have recruited contract workers through word-of-mouth from friends, relatives, other families, neighbours, friends of neighbours and teachers at school.
