Dating can be fun, exciting, scary and confusing all at the same time. Meeting, dating, breaking up and making up can teach you a lot about yourself and your values when it comes to committing yourself to one person.

There’s no specific ‘magic moment’ when you and someone you’ve been casually dating suddenly become an “item”. While the timing is different for everyone, here are a few ways to tell which situation you’re in.

  • You share informal events - such as a lunch date, a movie date, or dance.
  • You spend time together in a casual setting e.g., at a friend's house.
  • You share a unique closeness or intimacy with one special person in your life.
  • You’re seeing one person on a regular basis or choosing to be identified as being "with" this one person.
  • You refer to this person as your "girlfriend or "boyfriend".
