Epinephrine and Auto-Injectors

Using Epinephrine Auto-Injectors
  • Don't remove the safety release until you’re ready to use the auto-injector. On the EpiPen®, the safety release is either grey or blue (new version).  On the Twinject® it is green.
  • Never put your thumb, fingers or hand over the black (original version) or orange (new version) tip end of the EpiPen® or the red tip end of the Twinject®.
  • Don't use the auto-injector if the solution inside is discoloured or cloudy.
  • Don't place any foreign objects or the product insert in the carrier with the auto-injector as this may get in the way of taking the auto-injector out for use in an emergency.
  • Once used, ensure the auto-injector is disposed of safely and properly.  Give the auto-injector to medical personnel for disposal (i.e., Emergency Medical Services or Emergency Room staff).  Never put used or unused epinephrine auto-injectors in the garbage.
  • According to the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2010), a second dose of epinephrine (if available) can be given “within 5-15 minutes after the first dose is given IF symptoms have not improved".
