Tuberculosis (TB)
Tuberculosis (TB) in the School Setting
It is important to recognize that the risk of acquiring TB at school is very low. If a case of TB is identified in the school, communication between the school and the health department is vital. A coordinated approach optimizes an efficient process and minimizes disruption to the school. Confidentiality is very important and very strict measures need to be taken to ensure that privacy is protected.
Peel Public Health will work very closely with the school to determine what action is needed. If it is determined that a contact investigation is required, it is the responsibility of the principal and staff members to provide the Health Department with up-to-date class lists, use their resources to provide communication to staff, students and parents (e.g. letters) and to assist in coordinating clinic details if required.
