Scabies sample parent notification letter

Dear Parent/Guardian:

An individual in your child’s classroom has been diagnosed and treated for scabies.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by tiny insects called 'mites'. Mites are spread from person to person through:

  • Direct skin contact (shaking or holding hands)
  • Sharing clothing, towels, pillows, blankets, etc., with those who have scabies.

The mites do not jump or fly. It is important to remember that anyone can get scabies.

The main symptom of scabies is a very itchy rash that:

  • Can take up to 4-6 weeks to develop.
  • Looks like white threads, tiny red bumps or scratches.
  • Can appear anywhere on the body, but it is generally found between the fingers, around the wrists or elbows and in body creases.
  • Can be very itchy at night.

Watch your child(ren) closely for signs of scabies. If you suspect that your child has scabies, see your family doctor. Your family doctor will confirm if your child has scabies and recommend the appropriate treatment for your child, family and close contacts. It is important to inform the school if your child is diagnosed with scabies.

If you have any further questions, please call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.peelregion.ca.

Thank you.
