Since 2000, the Region of Peel has monitored the risk of West Nile Virus (WNV) transmission to humans. In 2009, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) expanded the WNV program to include additional vector-borne diseases. The following report provides information about the transmission and health effects of the vector-borne diseases of concern in Peel region, as well as details and results of surveillance and risk reduction activities undertaken in 2010.

In 2009, the WNV Prevention Plan has been transitioned to a Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Plan which focuses on WNV but also addresses two other vector-borne diseases of concern in Ontario: Lyme disease and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease which poses potential health risks to humans. While WNV was first detected in North America in 1999, WNV activity in Peel Region first occurred among birds and mosquitoes in 2001. During the following year (2002), the greatest number of confirmed human cases in Peel Region occurred, including two deaths.

The Region of Peel has developed a 2008 WNV Prevention Plan. Activities outlined in the plan include public education, monitoring for WNV in people and the environment and implementing measures to reduce mosquito breeding in Peel in 2008.
- West Nile Virus in the Region of Peel - 2007 (PDF 398kb, 58 pages)
Surveillance results of human cases, birds and mosquitoes in 2007 showed a decrease in West Nile Virus (WNV) activity in the Region of Peel and across Ontario. However, some western provinces such as Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta saw increased activity. A record number of 1,422 human cases occurred in Saskatchewan. In comparison, 15 human cases occurred in Ontario.

The Region of Peel has developed a 2007 WNV Prevention Plan. Activities outlined in the plan include public education, monitoring for WNV in people and the environment and implementing measures to reduce mosquito breeding in Peel in 2007.
