Volunteers at Peel Health have earned a reputation as exceptional people. Their time, efforts and generosity are valued by Peel Health staff and the community. Clients of all ages, cultures and social backgrounds benefit through our network of caring volunteers.

How to Apply for Volunteer Positions

  • What’s the process?
    Our process begins with you sending in a resume, followed by an interview and application process.

  • What are the requirements?
    We require two references, and a police record search; forms will be provided during the application process.  Please read volunteer opportunity descriptions for requirements specific to individual positions.

  • When can I start to volunteer?
    The length of the application process depends on availability of program opportunities and the completion of references and police record search.

Volunteers can volunteer for specific events throughout the year. Some examples are listed below.

Long-term/Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Healthy Babies Healthy Children In-Home Family Visitor Volunteer

  • Provide competent and reliable in-home family support and promote healthy growth and development of children by supporting families in their homes.
  • Support isolated and overburdened families through competent and reliable child care. The parents must always be present; you will never be left alone with the child(ren). 
  • Engage in activities such as playing or doing homework with the child(ren) while the parent can do their laundry, cooking, etc…
  • Ensure the safety of infant(s)/children at all times.
  • Maintain client confidentiality within the parameters defined by Peel Health.
  • Set achievable goals with client during family visit.
  • Communicate with client about acceptable activities for their children.
  • Consult and debrief with Volunteer Services Coordinator regarding challenging or difficult situations.
  • The time commitment for this is three hours/week for a minimum of three months.

Breastfeeding Companions Program Volunteer

  • Increase mothers’ breastfeeding confidence by providing support, encouragement and information according to the Breastfeeding Companions training manual provided by Peel Public Health. This volunteer position is a peer support position and is conducted by telephone. The next training will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011.

  • Please note that the pre-requisite for this position is that you have breastfed your own children for a minimum of 6 months.

Best Start

The mission of this program is to reduce the incidence of low-birth-weight babies by offering free comprehensive services that promote the healthiest pregnancies possible.

Healthy Start Program

  • Volunteers provide support to the Healthy Start Best Start program by assisting staff to prepare a healthy breakfast and provide child care. There are six program sites requiring volunteers throughout Peel.

Teen Prenatal Supper Club Program

  • Volunteers provide support to the staff at the Teen Prenatal Supper Clubs (locations in Mississauga, Brampton and Malton) to prepare a healthy dinner and provide child care.

Postpartum Mood Disorder Program (PMD)

  • This program aims to build the community’s capacity to respond to families at risk for or experiencing PMD.
  • The trained volunteer will provide information to small community groups about PMD in order to build awareness and reduce stigma associated with PMD.
  • Volunteers are mothers who have experienced PMD, and therefore have a unique understanding of how it affects families and how to cope.
    • Please note you must have experienced PMD in order to qualify for the volunteer position.
    • Please note the program is currently on hold, however, we are accepting applications for future training

Collating Support

  • Volunteers assist Health Services divisional program staff by collating a variety of program promotional materials.

Healthy Sexuality Clinic

  • Our Healthy Sexuality Program promotes a sexually healthy community in the Peel. Staff provide community outreach as well as free, confidential sexual health information. Volunteers support the healthy sexuality clinic in Brampton only during non clinic hours.
    • Please note there are currently no vacancies at the Healthy Sexuality Clinic.

Needle Exchange Program

  • The goal of the program is to prevent the spread of HIV as well as Hepatitis B and C among drug users and self piercers while using a harm-reduction philosophy.
  • Volunteers will assemble ‘quick packs’ for the Peel Works Needle Exchange Program.
    • Please note there are currently no vacancies for the Needle Exchange Program.

Immunization Clinic Volunteer

  • Volunteers support the Communicable Disease Division, Vaccine Preventable Diseases staff at the 2010 fall influenza clinics.

Community Food Advisor Volunteers

  • This program is a volunteer peer-education program. It was developed to improve and promote safe and nutritious food selections, preparation, and storage practices by increasing access to reliable information and education.  Volunteers will participate in food fairs, conduct presentations, and conduct cook shops within Peel. 
    • Please note recruitment for the Community Food Advisors is currently on hold.
