The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that active and healthy employees have:

  • Increased energy, performance and productivity
  • Decreased incidence of injury, claims and sick-leave
  • Reduced incidence of stress leave

  • Fatigue, inattention, accidents and low productivity are more common among unfit employees.
  • Fit employees miss fewer days of work, have fewer accidents, are less prone to the harmful effects of stress and have higher job satisfaction than non-fit ones.

A 2013 StatsCan Report found that workdays lost to illness and disability increases with age for both genders. The good news it that physical activity can help to counter the effects of aging and improve both sick times and disability profiles for those over 50.

  • After implementing their workplace wellness program, MDS Nordion in Kanata, Ontario reduced their rate of absenteeism from six days a year to an average of four days at a time the Canadian average was eight days a year.
  • Johnson and Johnson watched their absenteeism rate fall by 15% within two years of introducing their corporate fitness program.
  • Canada Life in Toronto showed a return on investment of $3.40 on each corporate dollar invested in physical activity programming. These returns were seen mostly from productivity gains, reduced employee turnover, decreased medical expenses.
