2008 Art Gallery of Peel Exhibition Schedule

Memento Mori
2 November 2008 – 11 January 2009 (Permanent Collection Gallery)
Curated by Niwah Visser, this exhibition examines portrait photography from the 1880s to the early 1900s. This exhibition aims to reflect the role of the people within the portraits as ghostly figures that are a figment of a forgotten past still seeking to remind us of the fragility of our own lives and emphasize our connections to people around us and our communities.

The True North: Landscapes of the Arctic
27 Sept. 2007 – 17 Feb. 2008 (Permanent Collection Gallery)
Features paintings and works on paper by a variety of artists including K. M. Graham, Doris McCarthy, Pat Fairhead and Hilton Hassell.

Corinne (with false eyelashes) - Michael ThompsonMichael Thompson: Paintings and Drawings
7 Nov. 2007 – 6 Jan. 2008 (Main and Hallway Galleries)
Widely regarded as one of Canada's most talented high realist painters, Michael Thompson has been a resident of Peel Region’s neighbouring community, Oakville, for several decades. This exhibition will survey some of his recent work in painting and drawing media.

The Angel - SabelisSabelis: A Retrospective
16 Jan. – 24 Feb. 2008 (Main and Hallway Galleries)
Sabelis’ rich visual language draws on his experiences in Indonesia as well as his native Holland and Canada. This exhibition will survey his work in various media including painting, tapestry and printmaking.

Fish Story - Ted FullertonSports Illustrated
20 Feb. – 4 May 2008 (Permanent Collection Gallery)
Sports and the arts aren’t necessarily the strange bedfellows they might seem to be, as seen in this exhibition of prints and photographs by various artists including Andrew Hunter, Ted Fullerton and William Ronald. Also features historic photographs and artefacts from the Collections of the Region of Peel Museum and Archives.

Passage 04 - Anna YuschukAnna Yuschuk: Passage
5 March – 13 April 2008 (Main and Hallway Galleries)
Ukrainian born and educated Anna Yuschuk has resided in Mississauga in Peel Region since the early 1990s. Widely exhibited in her native country, Yuschuk has also developed a strong reputation in the Greater Toronto Area with her evocative light infused paintings.

35th Annual Juried Show
30 April - 15 June 2008 (Main and Hallway Galleries)
Begun as a volunteer initiative, the Gallery’s long running juried show has acquired a strong reputation in south-western Ontario and frequently showcases artists on the tipping point of their careers. Community support of the exhibition is also strong, with over half of the participants coming from the Peel area. Jurors: Ivan Jurakic; Curator, Cambridge Galleries; Anna Yuschuk, Artist. The Fabulous Fifties
7 May – 7 Sept. 2008 (Permanent Collection Gallery)
An era of tremendous economic growth and burgeoning consumer culture, the 1950s also saw the rise of Canadian modernism. This exhibition salutes the decade with prints and paintings by Jack Nichols, William Ronald, Alexandra Luke, Walter Yarwood and Harold Town.

Heritage Complex
25 June – 7 Sept. 2008
Curated by Atanas Bozdarov and Tejpal Ajji – two recent art and art history graduates of the cooperative program between Sheridan College and the University of Toronto at Erindale, Mississauga – this exhibition features recent alumni and nationally established artists who specialize in architecturally based multimedia and installation work including Eric Glavin, Arbour Lake Sghool, Corin Sworn, Henry Tsang, Adrian Blackwell and Felicitas Rohden.

Toronto - Ryszard LitwiniukRyszard Litwiniuk
17 Sept. – 26 Oct. 2008 (Main and Hallway Galleries; Exterior building grounds)
Mississauga based artist, Ryszard Litwiniuk, exercises an interest in spatial play and naturally occurring patterns in his scavenged stumps of wood. The artist will utilize the grounds of the Heritage Complex for the exhibition and also show a series of transparent skin prints similar in appearance to the linear whorls in the wood of his sculptures.

Canada Council for the ArtsWe acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts which last year invested $17.1 million in visual arts throughout Canada.

Winter - Charlotte Schrieber40 Years of Collecting
5 Nov. 2008 – 3 Jan. 2009 (Main and Hallway Galleries)
From a small group of historical paintings of Peel Region, the Permanent Collection of the Art Gallery of Peel has grown to encompass some 4000 works in diverse media by artists from across the country. Works acquired early in the institutions’ collecting history will be presented alongside examples of contemporary Canadian painting, sculpture and printmaking.
