Archives

As of Monday, May 7, the Archives at PAMA will be closed for six weeks. We apologise for this interruption in service however the installation of security cameras and a compact storage system will help us serve you better when we reopen. The temporary Reading Room is still open for those who want to look at microfilm and local history books, but no original material will be made available during this period. Please call 905-791-4055, ext. 3630 to make an appointment.

Archives safely store memories, protecting photographs, documents, records and other materials of historical interest. Archival material can come from individuals and families, government, businesses, community groups and organizations. Archival material can be used in thousands of different ways… from providing old street names to background for municipal environmental assessments to genealogy (family tree) research.

The oldest record in the archives at the Peel Heritage Complex was created in the early 1800s. Our photograph collection spans 1850 to modern day. It captures events such as Hurricane Hazel, the AVRO Arrow, the development of Bramalea, the Mississauga train derailment and much more.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our "Archives Awareness Week" quiz in April 2010. Answers are below…

Please stand by while images load.

  • 1979 | Looking north up Hurontario Street from south of Dundas Street during the Mississauga train derailment.
  • 1920 | The view north on Main Street in Caledon.

Archivist’s Note:
Hurontario Street in Mississauga, Main Street in Brampton, Main Street in Caledon, Highway 10, and Centre Road (in the historical records) all refer to the same road.

Archival access is limited during the closure, but researchers are encouraged to make inquires. Visit our Gallery for links to family histories, war records and other resources
