Initial
Contact
An
Interpreter from the Heritage Complex made
initial contacts with the teachers and facility
coordinators, and led discussions about
the project and its purpose.
Preparations
Through
a number of preliminary sessions, the students
prepared to interview the seniors with insightful
and appropriate questions. These sessions
prepared the students to be comfortable
with the aspect of interviewing as well
as being with seniors through role playing,
class discussion and introductory letters.
The
Interviews
The
students interviewed the seniors using tape
recorders, asking a variety of questions
(some written by the Heritage Complex staff
and most written by the students) about
their memories, childhood, and lives in
Peel, and transcribed the interviews.
Giving
Back
With
the help of a local artist, the students
created two "Memory Books" of text and illustrations
based on the interviews. One book was given
to each senior partner, and several students
donated the other book to the Heritage Complex.
The
Heritage Complex also collected the taped
recordings with over 18 hours of interviews
which will be available in the Brain Cell
Learning Centre for visitors to enjoy.
Budget
The
Peel Heritage Complex was one of only a
few Peel facilities to receive funding from
the Millennium Bureau. The Oral History
Project employed a Coordinator, four Program
Interpreters, and an Artist at various times
throughout the four-month project. The Millennium
Bureau funded one third of the Oral History
Project budget.
Many
items, like the tape recorders and microphones,
were one-time expenses - now that we have
the equipment, and have had the opportunity
to test aspects of the project, we can offer
the project again in a more efficient manner,
and for much lower costs. The Peel Heritage
Complex will continue to create important
and lasting partnerships with students and
seniors in our community.
For
more information on the specifics of this
program please contact the Heritage Complex.
