Function and style:
The Registry Office was where people came to register all legal changes in land titles such as purchase and sales, wills, mortgages, liens, etc.
In 1890 this building replaced an earlier structure on Queen Street in Brampton. The architect designed the Registry Office to fit between the jail and the courthouse and specified the same colour of brick as was used on the courthouse. He also used the same semi-circular fanlight detail as seen on the courthouse.
There have been several additions to the original building of 28 X 50 feet. It served as the Registry Office for Peel until 1959 when the new Registry Office opened in the Peel County office building.
In 1968 this former Registry Office opened as the Peel County Museum and Art Gallery, and has been used for a variety of purposes since then, most recently the Art Gallery of Peel.
