2006 - 2007 School Program Guide

2006 - 07
School Program Guide

Helpful Hints | Exhibition Schedule |Costs | En Français

Dear Teacher:

Thank you once again for making the Peel Heritage Complex (PHC) one of the Region’s premier destinations and workshop leaders! Our 2005-2006 school year was highly successful; approximately 10,000 students visited the Complex or participated in one of our many in-school art workshops. We hope the upcoming year will be just as successful and rewarding!

If you have never been to the Complex, you’re missing out on one of the Region of Peel’s hidden jewels! Located across from Brampton City Hall and Gage Park, the Complex was once the County Jail and Registry Office. Today, the Complex is comprised of the Region of Peel Archives, the Art Gallery of Peel and the Region of Peel Museum.

Our programs are designed with multiple curriculum connections in mind and are customized for all ages. We are always happy to try and tailor a program for your class. Last year, we created two new programs based on teachers’ requests!

And don’t forget – avoid paying for buses; we can bring the gallery to your classroom with our Art in the Afternoon program!

See you soon!

Art in the Afternoon: The Four Elements
Available year-round; perfect for our Dan Kennedy: The Voice Mansion (Yammerhead’s Return) exhibition. See exhibition schedule.

  • Colour, line, texture and shape - the four basic elements of art come alive in these interactive, creative workshops. Designed for younger grades, these one-hour workshops focus on an element using fun activities and an innovative studio project. You can choose from a number of combinations - come for the morning for our First Visit program and stay after lunch for a workshop OR book all four elements OR pick the element you feel your students would most benefit from.

  • Wavy & Jagged - Lines are the basis of all works of art. Students will explore how artists use lines in a variety of ways. Our studio project involves simple printmaking techniques. • Blobs & Daubs - Texture helps create depth and substance in a work of art. How do artists make clouds look fluffy? Or tree bark rough? Students will create a tactile work of art.

  • Circles & Squares - Every work of art employs shapes: geometric, organic, or freeform. How do shapes help create tone and weight in a piece? In this workshop, students will create a landscape using only pre-cut shapes.

First Visit and Art SmArt
Both are available year-round (See our Helpful Hints)

  • First Visit:
Designed to give younger viewers their first foray into an art gallery setting, First Visit is a two-hour, action-packed program! Time Trekkers
Available year-round

This is an introduction to archaeology for grades 4 to 8. The tour is divided into two gallery spaces, the First Nations Gallery and the Brain Cell Learning Centre.

  • First Nations Gallery:
Students discuss the role and tools of an archaeologist. They are placed in groups - artifact analysis, mapping a grid and an archaeological dig site.

Students rotate to complete all areas. There is also a workbook to complete.

  • Brain Cell:
Following a 15 minute video on archaeology, students are placed into groups to take part in the "Garbage Activity." The Garbage Activity allows students to pretend they are archaeologists from the future.

By sifting through (clean!) garbage, they make inferences about the family who created the refuse: Any children? How old? Any cultural clues? What hobbies did they have? This is always a favourite with teachers and kids alike!

$4/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.
