Workshops

Art in the Afternoon: The Four Elements

Available year-round. Please see exhibition schedule.

  • Colour, line, texture and shape — the four basic elements of art come alive in these interactive, creative workshops. Designed for younger grades, these one-hour workshops focus on an element using fun activities and an innovative studio project. You can choose from a number of combinations — come for the morning for our First Visit program and stay after lunch for a workshop OR book all four elements OR pick the element you feel your students would most benefit from.

  • Warm & Cool — In this workshop, students will explore colours and how an artist uses them to convey mood and emotion. Our studio project includes an Andy Warhol inspired work of art.

  • Wavy & Jagged — Lines are the basis of all works of art. Students will explore how artists use lines in a variety of ways. Our studio project involves simple printmaking techniques.

  • Blobs & Daubs — Texture helps create depth and substance in a work of art. How do artists make clouds look fluffy? Or tree bark rough? Students will create a tactile work of art.

  • Circles & Squares — Every work of art employs shapes: geometric, organic, or freeform. How do shapes help create tone and weight in a piece? In this workshop, students will create a landscape using only pre-cut shapes.

$5.50/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

Art in the Afternoon

A great way to further enhance your trip to the Complex! Following your tour, an Educator can visit your classroom to lead your students through a more intensive, art-based project. Sessions last 1.5 hours and are designed to highlight a number of in-gallery programs and make numerous curriculum connections. The Educator can visit your class on the same day or another day you choose within two weeks of your in-gallery visit. You can even opt to stay here for the afternoon and still have the bus depart by 2 p.m.

  • Watercolour 101 — A perfect follow-up for Art SmArt and First Visit. An Educator will teach various tricks and techniques used by professional artists. Students will create one “practice” sheet and one final painting.

  • Petroglyph Printmaking — Designed to enhance our First Nations program. Students will learn about petroglyphs and, using a simple printmaking technique, create a work inspired by petroglyphs.

  • Faux Oil Painting — In this unique workshop, students will learn to mix their own “faux” oil paint. Educators will demonstrate how to create colours and texture with this non-toxic alternative to oil paint. Students will complete a painted “sketch” on a 5” x 7” canvas board.

  • Printmaking 101 — Using simple printmaking techniques such as monoprints, collagraphs and etchings, students will create one-of-a-kind works of art.

  • Settling in for Winter — Great with our Settlers program. Students will rotate among stations. Activities may include paper quilts, braided rugs, corking and paper quilling.

$8/student (includes in-gallery and in-class sessions), 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

For only $5.50/student you can book a single Art in the Afternoon session, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

First Nations

Available year-round

Our First Nations tour is designed for grades 3 and 6 to highlight key points of the curriculum. Students will explore the exhibition, handle artifacts and re-create a First Nations craft that can be further embellished back at school or home.

In the first hour, students use workbooks to view, analyze and interpret the exhibition and then make a “parfleche” (First Nations’ “little suitcases”) to take home. In the second hour, students rotate around four different stations:

  1. Artifact Discovery,
  2. Petroglyphs,
  3. Legends, and
  4. Archaeological Burial Site

This program can also be partnered with Art in the Afternoon.

$4.50/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

Time Trekkers

Available year-round

This is an introduction to archaeology for Grades 4 to 8. The tour is divided into two gallery spaces, the First Nations Gallery and the Brain Cell Learning Centre.

  • First Nations Gallery:
Students discuss the role and tools of an archaeologist. They are placed in groups — artifact analysis, mapping a grid and an archaeological dig site.

Students rotate to complete all areas. There is also a workbook to complete.
  • Brain Cell:
Following a 15-minute video on archaeology, students are placed into groups to take part in the “Garbage Activity.” This activity allows students to pretend they are archaeologists from the future.

By sifting through (clean!) garbage, they make inferences about the family who created the refuse: Any children? How old? Any cultural clues? What hobbies did they have? This is always a favourite with teachers and kids alike!

$4/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

Settlers

Available year-round

Kids will learn how settlers lived by exploring various aspects of pioneer life. In the exhibition space, kids will play guessing games and view artifacts from Hearth and Home, Farming, and Trades exhibitions. In the classroom, some of the activities may include: “What Would You Pack?,” “School Days” and “Compare Your Home to a Settler’s Home.” They will discuss how a pioneer child would live and compare that to their own lives.

If partnered with Art in the Afternoon, students will make three projects!

$4/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.

History of Brampton

Available year-round

This one-hour tour allows a class to tour the Complex (formerly the County Jailand Registry Office) and discuss how a little town grew into the vibrant city it is today!

If available, Educators may take classes into the historic Peel County Courthouse next door. Students will learn about the Complex’s history, as well as a brief overview of Peel’s history from the First Nations to the early settlers in this region. There is also hands-on tool and artifact discovery.

This tour is perfect for Grade 5 classes already booked at Brampton’s City Hall or ESL classes.

$4/student, 30 students minimum, 60 students maximum.
