The Peel Second World War Records Board Cards

During 2005 - The Year of the Veteran - the Region of Peel Archives created an index to a unique collection of Second World War documents: The service cards of the Peel War Records Board.

The service cards were prepared for local men and women who enlisted in Peel County, and contain a variety of biographical and genealogical details as well as employment history, religious affiliation, military service and honours.

The service cards of the Peel War Records Board are on long-term loan from The Brampton Public Library and are available for research at the Region of Peel Archives, and an alphabetical list of names is available to search online.

Origins of the Peel War Records Board and the Records

The concept for this project is credited to Peel’s local Member of Parliament during WW II – Gordon Graydon. While the concept of the project seems to have germinated in September of 1940, the Board was formally established in April 1941.

The volunteer members of this Board were located in each municipality of the county, and worked on two levels: “Supervising Recorders” and “Deputy Recorders”. Questionnaires were sent to either the enlisted person themselves or the next of kin of all soldiers, sailors and airmen from the county.

As the information was gathered it was typed onto colour coded cards, possibly representing the branch of service, i.e. Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marine, Nursing Sisters, Firefighters Corps, etc.

The records were kept at the Brampton Public Library with the Librarian, Miss Josephine (“ Josie”) M. Fingland, being the Secretary of the Board. It is not yet known how or when the Board was disbanded.
