Housing And Shelter In Peel Region: Family Housing Workgroup Report

That Regional Council authorize the Commissioner of Housing and Property to utilize Federal Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative funding and Provincial program funding opportunities to pursue the preparation of a proposal for a family transitional housing project in the Region;

And further, that this report be forwarded to all area MPPs and MPs

Report Highlights

  • From 1999 to 2000, the cost of serving homeless families in Peel's shelter system has increased by 60%
  • The Family Housing Work Group was formed in response to the issues raised in the Final Report of Peel's Task Force on Homelessness and community concerns regarding the declining housing options available for families in Peel
  • The monthly average number of families served at the overflow hostel (Rosetown Inn) increased 120 % in 2000 over 1999. Use of the hotel remains high in 2001.
  • Data from Peel family shelter facilities indicates a trend toward longer periods of stay at Peel's family shelter facilities. The average length of stay in Peel's family shelters has increased by 30% from 1999 to 2000
  • Members of the Family Housing Work Group have increasing numbers of client families that are facing crisis as a result of housing market trends in the Region
  • Peel has a clear downward trend in the availability of rental housing since 1996
  • Intent of the Work Group is to develop a transitional housing proposal that would utilize federal funding already designated for the Region
  • Family transitional housing need was identified as a priority area in the Region of Peel's Community Supports Plan
