The Region introduced its first corporate orientation program to employees in March 2003.

Employee engagement begins with the first impression a new staff member has of their workplace, manager and co-workers. A solid orientation program helps to create a positive first impression and promotes a feeling of connectedness to the organization.

The Region introduced its new corporate orientation program to employees in March 2003.

“We’ve come a long way since Regional bus tours,” says Cathy Ancheta, Development and Education Specialist, Human Resources division.

In the early seventies, when Peel’s workforce consisted of a few hundred people, the cornerstone of orientation involved taking new employees on a bus tour of various Region of Peel work sites. Today with more than 3,000 employees across eight departments, Peel saw the need to implement a corporate orientation program to complement existing departmental orientation practices.

    Information Package

The corporate orientation package includes a map showing many of the Region’s key facilities and locations, and a brochure that provides an overview of the Region’s workplace culture, training, benefits and much more. To ensure the package included all the necessary components, the Orientation Team solicited feedback from the Region’s CAO Advisory Committee, and from a specially formed Orientation Advisory Committee.

“The goal of corporate orientation is to provide new employees with information they need to know about Peel in their first few months on the job,” says Stephen Jackson, Manager of Corporate HR Initiatives.

    Orientation Partner
“New employees want to feel welcome,” says Cathy. “One of the most effective ways of making employees feel at ease is by partnering them with a co-worker – someone they can go to if they have questions or need help, in addition to their supervisor.”

These and other tools are now in place to make employees feel welcome and connected to their new workplace.
