“I didn’t know it back when I started almost 25 years ago, but the Region was training me to become an environmentally-conscious employee.

Looking back, I was responsible for monitoring waste that arrived for disposal at the historical Britannia Landfill Site that is now the BraeBen Golf Course in Mississauga. We met stringent guidelines from the Ministry of Environment at this site, which began as an environmental project. And now, it is a beautiful golf course for many to enjoy.

I also remember assembling small packages of compost from the Caledon-Peel Organics Composting program. I packaged almost three tonnes of organic soil for residents to use in their flowerbeds and lawns. My neigbours were envious of my beautiful flowerbeds and lawn, since the organic soil helped keep the moisture in and provided nutrients to my plants!

For the past five years in the Operations and Maintenance division of Public Works, we have continued our commitment to improve air quality with the purchase of nine fuel-efficient vehicles, which all started with the purchase of the first hybrid car in 2003. Since then, we’ve implemented anti-idling programs and the introduction of the biodiesel pilot program.

I have now, once again, the opportunity to move into another area of the Region to research and recommend initiatives in the Public Works Property Management section. There is a lot already happening at the Region and I look forward to continuing to help the Region with its ‘green’ goals and to continue to make a difference.”
