Foods and beverages that are either deep-fried or contain a lot of sugar, alcohol and caffeine can temporarily boost your mood, but when you have too much too often, they can make you feel anxious, unmotivated and can prevent you from sleeping well.

And remember: don’t skip meals. Eat smaller meals more often to avoid low blood sugar levels that can make you feel low, irritable and fatigued.

The Healthy Workplace team is committed to providing you a safe and supportive working environment that encourages making healthy lifestyle choices.
Many foods and beverages are loaded with nutrients and promote mood enhancing brain chemicals that can create positive feelings and boost your mood if you eat them consistently.

Check out how the following foods affect your mental health:

    • Fruits and vegetables provide your body with the vitamins and minerals you need to support good mental health.
    • Omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce symptoms of depression and may positively affect Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.
    • Complex carbohydrates can stabilize blood sugar levels and are a better choice compared to sugary, refined foods, which often leave you feeling tired and irritable once the brief energy “high” passes.
    • Proteins can prevent mood swings and sluggishness by stabilizing your blood sugar levels.
    • Water is important. Even mild dehydration can affect your feelings and make you restless or irritable.
