Protecting Peel's Environment
By Frank Giorno

Bill Ford and the members of the Region of Peel’s Spill Control Team are on the front lines when it comes to protecting Peel’s environment.

As a Spill Control Co-ordinator, Bill and the other team members implement the Region of Peel’s Spill Control Plan, which covers municipal responses and activities for locating and containing major spills.

When a spill is reported, the Duty Spill Co-ordinator arrives on the scene with a vehicle stocked with spill containment equipment. The spill coordinator will inform the owner/controller of a spilled substance about their legal responsibilities, and collect all relevant information for billing the cost of the cleanup.

Some spills require detective work to locate the source. This involves tracing a spill through storm sewers using maps and knowledge of local industries. In 2001, the Spill Co-ordinators handled 591 spills, complaints and gas alarms.

Bill enjoys being part of a great team, one that plays a significant role in protecting Peel’s environment and the public’s health.
