r teething… or not eating properly. You don’t need medical help but you sure need some advice from a local health professional. Who do you call?

The call centres at Peel Health are up and running and ready to answer your health questions over the holidays. So… ask away!

All inbound calls come through Peel Public Health, Peel Health’s one stop phone line for all public health and long-term care questions.

During the holidays, Peel Public Health operates with at least half of its full staff complement. This tight-knit group of melodic (and helpful) voices develop the holiday schedule together, trying to meet each person’s request for time off. If that fails, everyone pitches in and takes a shift. The best part of working the holidays at Peel Public Health is the veritable feast of sweets (it’s almost enough to tempt those on holidays to come in for a snack… okay, that’s a stretch but they sure are good!)

Peel Public Health handles all general inquiries and refers specific program questions to one of the many call centres throughout the department. Every specialized call centre in the department, including family health, breastfeeding, healthy lifestyles, sexual health, communicable diseases and environmental health, is staffed with highly trained public health professionals with special skills in telephone assessment and counselling.

Calls range from proper food handling techniques and car seat installation tips to how to breastfeed your baby, healthy nutrition, and yes, constipation.

On any given day during the year, constipation is one of the most frequently asked questions posed to the nurses staffing the family health call centre. The nurses working the family health call centre understand the stresses and issues facing parents of young children, and they take great pride in giving callers the most up-to-date information they have on a wide range of topics, including toddler nutrition, the importance of play, how to get your baby to sleep and so much more.

So the next time you need health information during the holidays (or any day for that matter), call your colleagues at Peel Health.
