One-Stop Health Info A Big Success In Peel
(Brampton) - Health Line Peel, the Region of Peel's health information call service, has seen a 68-per-cent increase in the number of telephone calls it receives since its June 5, 2000 launch. The call centre answered 3,592 calls in July 2000, its first full month of operation. By January 2001, calls had increased to 6,029 a month.
Peel residents can phone 905-799-7700 for answers to health questions regarding:
- immunization and disease control;
- preventing heart disease;
- living smoke free;
- public health inspections;
- injury prevention;
- healthy babies and children;
- violence prevention;
- prenatal classes;
- volunteer program;
- healthy eating and staying active;
- sexual health;
- children in need of dental treatment;
- children with developmental disabilities; and
- long-term care facilities.
Callers talk to a client service representative who can answer their questions directly or can transfer their calls to the appropriate public health nurse, public health inspector or registered dietitian.
"Health Line Peel is another example of Peel Health's commitment to ensuring all Peel residents have equal access to our health programs," says Dr. David McKeown, Medical Officer of Health for Peel Region.
Currently, customer service representatives respond directly to calls ranging from requests for public health publications, to reports of animal bites and to food complaints. Other calls are transferred to health specialists ready to answer queries in their fields of expertise.
All phone calls to Health Line Peel received between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, are answered directly; callers during these hours are never put through to voice mail.
