Region Celebrates Volunteerism in Peel
(Brampton)- Regional Council today praised more than 1,500 Peel volunteers by proclaiming the year 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) in the Region of Peel. At Regional headquarters in the City of Brampton, Regional Chair Emil Kolb and Chief Administrative Officer Roger Maloney proudly raised the 2001 IYV flag as volunteers looked on.
"The Region is fortunate to have so many supportive and generous volunteers," said Emil Kolb. "These individuals truly make a difference to Peel and are at the heart of what it means to live in a caring and healthy community."
Peel volunteers support Regional programs and services by:
- Delivering public health programs in the community
- Visiting residents of the Region's three long-term care facilities
- Serving on advisory boards to assist in the operation of Transhelp, Housing programs and Peel Living facilities
- Offering amateur radio operator services for Ambulance and Emergency Programs
- Educating local schools and other agencies about paramedics and the life-saving work they do
- Participating in activities at the Peel Children's Water Festival and Environment Days
"It takes a special individual to become a volunteer," said Roger Maloney. "We're very grateful to our volunteers for their time and generosity, and we thank them for giving back to the Peel community."
The Region plans to host a Corporate International Year of Volunteers celebration on Sunday,
Sept. 30, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Mississauga Convention Centre. Volunteers will be honoured by local politicians and members of the Regional Senior Management Team.
"This is such an important day for volunteerism in Peel," said Betty Steele, Co-chair, International Year of Volunteers Planning Committee. "IYV helps Regional departments validate volunteer contributions, recruit new volunteers and retain those who are already involved."
The United Nations General Assembly officially declared 2001 the International Year of Volunteers.
Recognizing International Year of Volunteers is consistent with Goal 5 of the Region's Strategic Plan, Beyond 2000: Directions for Peel's Future; "Be a strong and effective regional government"; and Strategic Direction 5.9, "Promote the participation and involvement of volunteers as valued partners in Regional programs."
