Art Gallery of Peel Exhibits Works from its Permanent Collection

(Brampton) - Aspects of the Collection, a new exhibit at the Art Gallery of Peel, features recent acquisitions from the Gallery's Permanent Collection and includes works by noted contemporary and historical Peel artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Doris McCarthy and Tom La Pierre. The exhibit is open until September 29, 2001.

Over the years, the Gallery's Permanent Collection has grown from a small group of historical paintings to a large collection of 2,500 works in diverse media by artists from across the country.

"The Gallery's Permanent Collection is a valuable resource. This exhibition gives an overview of the breadth of the Gallery's collecting practices and provides opportunities for our public to see some new pieces and old favourities," said David Somers, Curator, Peel Heritage Complex.

The Gallery relies on public generosity in building its Permanent Collection. Donations and bequests from private collectors have greatly enhanced the Gallery's holdings, and some patrons have made an ongoing commitment with gifts from their personal collections. This strong support has helped the Gallery assemble a collection of national stature and the largest public collection in Peel Region.

The Art Gallery of Peel is part of the Peel Heritage Complex operated by the Region of Peel. It is located at 9 Wellington St. E., Brampton. During August it is open to the public Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday: noon to 4:30 p.m. Commencing in September, the Complex will also be open Sundays: noon to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday evenings: 6 - 9 p.m. The admission fees are $2.50 for adults; $1.50 for seniors; $1 for students and $7 for families.

The Peel Heritage Complex is made up of the Region of Peel Museum, the Art Gallery of Peel, and Region of Peel Archives. Together they collect, preserve and display a wide variety of materials related to Peel's Heritage.
