Region of Peel holds fall Environment Days in Mississauga
(Brampton) - Residents of Mississauga are invited to drop off reusable goods, household hazardous waste and recyclable materials at the Region of Peel's annual fall Environment Day on Saturday, September 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada, 2660 Speakman Dr.
A second Environment Day event will take place on Saturday, September 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2390 Argentia Rd.
"Environment Days offer residents an opportunity to donate reusable items such as books, clothing and small appliances that are taking up precious space in their homes. All items collected at these events that are in good condition will be donated to Goodwill," said Ben Shepherd, Manager of Waste Collection and Processing.
Among the other materials collected free of charge at Environment Day are:
- Household hazardous waste - paint, oil, household cleaners, batteries
- Old tires - limit of six (NO heavy truck or tractor tires)
- Wood waste - lumber, small stumps and limbs (NO railway ties)
- Scrap metal (NO large appliances)
- Used electronic equipment (NO TVs)
"We're trying to make recycling a way of life for all residents in the Region," said Andrew Pollock, Director of Waste Management for the Region of Peel. "Convenience is a key factor in making this happen. By providing a one-stop location offering several recycling services on the same day, we hope to draw many participants from the community. Nearly 4,000 residents participated in the two spring Environment Day events."
In addition to dropping off their reusable, recyclable and household hazardous waste materials, residents can:
- Donate a non-perishable food item and receive two free bags of compost for the garden (limit two bags per car)
- Trade in their damaged blue or grey box and exchange it for a new one, replace their lost or stolen blue or grey box for free, or get a second blue or grey box (quantities are limited)
- Purchase backyard composters for only $17.25
All recycling facilities, including the Britannia Public Waste and Recycling Depot, the Brampton Recycling Depot, the Bolton Community Recycling Centre and the Caledon Public Waste and Recycling Depot, will accept recyclable materials, yard waste and household hazardous waste free of charge on both Environment Day event dates. Residents can also pick up composters, blue boxes, grey boxes and garden compost at these locations.
