(Brampton)- Time is ticking for smokers who want to quit and win prizes-and a healthier life-in the provincial Quit Smoking 2001 Contest that closes at the end of February.

"We know that many people need help rising to the challenge of quitting smoking," said Dr. David McKeown, the Region of Peel's Medical Officer of Health. "If smokers are ready to quit, we are here to help. No one has to do this alone."

Smokers thinking about quitting and entering the contest can call Health Line Peel at
905-779-7700 to plan their quit attempt or for other available supports. Smokers must return their completed registration forms by February 28 to be eligible to win one of the donated prizes.

To date, more than 3,500 Ontario residents have entered the contest and have a chance to win:

"Quitting smoking has been hard, but last year's Quit Smoking Contest really helped," said Tim Lent of Hamilton who won a weekend away in Montreal for quitting last year. "You really need to be ready or want to quit, and the incentive of a prize can really help."

For more information about the Quit Smoking 2001 Contest, or for a registration form, contact the Region of Peel Health Department or visit the Region's Web site at
Forms are also available by calling Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.

The Quit Smoking 2001 Contest is funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. It is supported by 57 local councils on smoking and health, and Ontario Public Health in partnership with the Industrial Accident Prevention Association and the Ontario Tobacco-free Network. This year's sponsors include CTV Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline.
