REGION INVITES RESIDENTS TO QUIT SMOKING AND WIN PRIZES
(Brampton) - Residents of Peel Region are invited to celebrate National Non-Smoking Week by quitting smoking starting in March and winning great prizes-like a Caribbean cruise or a DVD player.
Peel Health launched the Quit Smoking 2001 contest on January 15 in partnership with the Council for a Tobacco-Free Region of Peel (CTFRP) and other provincial partners. The deadline to register for the contest is February 18.
"We know that quitting smoking is difficult," said Dr. David McKeown, the Region of Peel's Medical Officer of Health. "It may take smokers several tries before they are able to quit, but each attempt will bring them closer to the goal."
To qualify for the contest prize draws, smokers must stop smoking before March 1 and remain smoke-free until March 31. Entrants must enlist the help of a support buddy to help them through the quitting process.
"Everyone who enters the contest and quits, even if it's only for a month, will come out a winner, Dr. McKeown said. "That is the ultimate goal of this event."
The contest supports the smoke-free bylaws adopted by the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon in 1999. Restaurants, banquet halls, food courts and food areas of recreational facilities will be smoke-free by June 1, 2001.
Establishments classified as bars or taverns must not admit young people under the age of 19 and will become smoke-free in 2004.
If you're serious about quitting, Peel Health suggests these helpful tips:
- Begin by thinking about why you want to smoke
- Think about why you want to stop
- Determine how to cope with the withdrawal symptoms
For tips on how to stay smoke-free and information on how to enter the contest, contact Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700 and ask for a Quit Smoking 2001 brochure, or call the Smokers' Helpline at 1-877-513-5333. Entry forms are available at www.region.peel.on.ca
The Region of Peel Quit Smoking 2001 contest is sponsored by the CTFRP in partnership with Peel Health and the local chapters of the Ontario Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Lung Association.
