(Brampton)-Licensed child care programs throughout Peel will receive $360,000 to help ensure the health and safety of children, mostly in the form of upgraded playgrounds, Regional Council heard today.

In a report to Council, the Children's Services Division of Social Services provided an update on its year-old role that includes allocating money to more than 350 licensed child care centres in the Region, including 11 Regionally-operated centres. The Region became Service System Manager for child care services in January 2000, and has since approved 32 requests from service providers for improvements.

"We wanted to work as a team, ensuring the excellence of child care quality and the continued safety of our children," said Lorna Reid, Director of Children's Services at the Region of Peel. "To make sure we covered all needs, we surveyed all licensed centres."

Before approval was given to any funding request, a specially-formed committee sought back-up documentation that included playground inspections, licences, evidence of health or licensing requirements and estimates for proposed work.

"We are pleased with the positive direction these improvements will take the centres," said Paul Vezina, Commissioner of Social Services. "The health and safety of our children is our top priority."
