Peel Access to Housing Moves to 5 Wellington, St. E., Brampton

(Brampton) - Peel Access To Housing is moving its office to 5 Wellington St. E. in Brampton, as of July 9, 2001. Peel Access To Housing co-ordinates the waiting list for all social housing in Peel. The office moves into the Region's Housing and Property office from 755 Queensway, E. Mississauga, where it has been operating as a provincial program. The office at 755 Queensway E. will close on Thursday July 5, 2001.

In December 2000, the provincial government proclaimed an Act to Reform Social Housing in Ontario, legislating changes in how public and non-profit social housing is operated in Ontario. Under the Act, the Region of Peel became responsible for operating and funding social housing programs in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. Two programs involved in the transfer are the co-ordinated waiting list and the Rent Supplement program.

"Little impact will be noticed by the applicant," says Natalie Miandro, Peel Access To Housing Program Manager. "Although the wait for housing is still very long, those seeking housing only need to go to one place to apply, because information and files will be held in one central location."

The Region of Peel welcomes their new role and responsibilities transferred from the province. Since 1997, it has been pay-but-no-say for municipalities, meaning municipalities had to pay for social housing programs without any voice in how programs were operated. Under the new legislation, Peel and other municipalities will have much more flexibility to influence policy and enhance program-operating efficiencies.

The housing crisis in Peel is disturbingly significant. Peel Access To Housing currently has 19,000 applicants representing 34,000 people on its waiting list. The Region of Peel is committed to reducing homelessness in Peel and to families at risk of losing their homes.

Peel Access To Housing can be reached at its new phone number, 905-453-1300 beginning July 9, 2001.
