Free Dental Screening Program For Children In Need Expands Into Summer Months

(Brampton) - Peel Health has expanded its dental screening program for children and is now offering clinics across the region during July and August.

During the free summer clinics, dental health professionals will screen preschool to Grade 8 children for cavities, gum disease and trauma to the teeth and mouth. Children and parents will also receive education on proper brushing and flossing, good oral hygiene, healthy snacking and injury prevention.

"Every child in Peel should have access to good dental care," said Dr. Dan Otchere, Public Health Dentist for the Region of Peel. "Poor dental health can affect a child's speech, general health, self-esteem and appearance. A child who is experiencing dental pain cannot eat nutritiously, get a good night's sleep or concentrate in school."

Since January 2001, Peel Health's dental screening clinics have identified more than 5,000 school-aged children who were in immediate need of dental treatment. A number of these children received free dental treatment as part of the Children In Need Of Treatment program (CINOT).

The dental screening clinics are by appointment only and are free of charge. Families of children in urgent need of dental care must meet the CINOT eligibility criteria to qualify for free dental services.

Clinics will be held in several different locations throughout the region. To schedule an appointment, call Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.
